The Judgment
Darkening of the Light: it furthers one to be steadfast amid adversity.
The hexagram of the Darkening of the Light shows the sun sunk beneath the earth, brightness wounded. In such times, holding firm to what is right through hardship is advantageous. In an age of darkness one does well to veil one's light and so keep oneself safe.
明入地中，明夷。君子以莅众，用晦而明。
明入地中，明夷。内文明而外柔顺，以蒙大难，文王以之。利艰贞，晦其明也，内难而能正其志，箕子以之。
Interpretation(original text)
明夷，光明受损、文明陷入黑暗之象。「夷」为伤也。日入于地下，光明被掩蔽，象征贤者遭难、智慧隐晦。殷之末世，箕子遭纣王迫害而佯狂，即明夷之典型。君子处明夷之时，外晦内明，韬光养晦以自保。
上坤为地，下离为火为日。日没入地下，光明隐而不彰。程颐释曰：「日入地中，明伤而晦，明夷之象也。」坤为柔顺暗昧，离为光明文雅，明在暗内，外暗内明。君子处此时，当「用晦而明」，以柔顺之态包裹内在之明，藏锋不露。
下卦离为明体，初九至六二得位有明德。六五居坤之中为卦之主，以阴柔居尊位而为暗主。上六居坤之极，暗极之象，为伤明之元凶。六二以阴居阴，中正光明，为全卦善处逆境之楷模。王弼注曰：「二以文明之德，居中得位，体柔顺之体以事暗君。」
明夷继晋之后。《序卦》曰：「进必有所伤，故受之以明夷。」进而不已则受伤害，光明过盛则转入晦暗，此阴阳消长之必然。明夷与晋互为综卦，晋为日出地上，明夷为日入地中，进退明暗相互转化。
The Lines
The light darkens in flight; the bird lets its wings droop. The superior man on his journey eats nothing for three days. Where he goes, his host speaks against him.
The wounded light is like a bird flying with drooping wings; the noble traveler goes hungry three days on his way, and though he presses on toward his goal, he draws the criticism of his host.

初九以阳居阳位得正，处明夷之始。「明夷于飞，垂其翼」，如鸟受伤而垂翅低飞。程颐释曰：「明见伤于始，故欲行而垂翼不能奋飞。」然「君子于行，三日不食」，虽遭困厄而仍有所往，坚持前行的意志不灭。此爻喻贤者初遇难时的忍辱求进。
The light darkens; he is wounded in the left thigh. He gives aid with the strength of a horse. Good fortune.
The light is hurt, struck in the left thigh; but by summoning a strong horse to his rescue he wins through. In hardship, drawing on the right help turns danger into safety.

六二以阴居阴位，中正得位，处离体之中，明德最盛。「明夷，夷于左股」，受伤于左腿，伤重但不致命。「用拯马壮吉」，以壮马奋力求救可得吉。朱熹曰：「六二文明中正，上无正应，但能以柔中自守。」此爻为处明夷之善者，内明外顺，终能脱险。
Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south. The great chieftain is taken. One must not expect to set things right too swiftly.
Amid the darkened light, on a hunt to the south, the ringleader of the evil is captured; yet one must not press for order all at once, but let the correction unfold in its time.

九三以阳居阳位得正，处内外卦之交，明在暗之际。「明夷于南狩」喻在南方行猎中征伐暗昧之主。程颐谓：「三以刚正之德居明体之上，上与上六暗极相应，有革除暗政之志。」然「不可疾贞」，不可操之过急，须待时机成熟。此爻为明夷中积极行动者。
He enters the left side of the belly and gains the very heart of the darkened light, then passes out through gate and court.
Penetrating into the hidden inner chamber, he grasps the true nature of the darkness at its core, and then withdraws clear through the gate. Having learned the truth from within, he makes his exit whole.

六四以阴居阴位得正，处坤体之始，已入暗域。「入于左腹」，深入暗昧之腹心。「获明夷之心」，深知暗主伤明之意。王弼注：「处坤之初，最近暗主，深入昏暗，知其隐情。」「于出门庭」，知情后应当远离。此爻喻近暗君而知其奸、能全身而退者。
The darkening of the light as with Prince Chi. Perseverance furthers.
Like Prince Chi, who dimmed his own brilliance to survive a corrupt age, one is helped by holding fast to what is right. Veil your virtue and abide, awaiting the return of light.

六五以阴居阳位不当，然居坤体之中、卦之尊位。此爻以箕子为典型——身处暴君之侧而「箕子之明夷」，以柔中之德韬光养晦。朱熹释曰：「居至暗之中，近至暗之君，而能正其志，箕子之事也。」「利贞」，坚守正道虽身处黑暗而明德不失。
Not light but darkness. First he climbed to heaven, then plunged into the earth.
This is not brightness but blackness: one who first rose to the heavens only to fall into the ground. The tyrant who flares up in power is destined to sink into ruin.

上六以阴居阴位，居坤之极、卦之终。暗极矣！「不明晦」，初始有明而后转入黑暗。此爻为明夷之暗主，即殷纣之象。程颐曰：「居卦之终，阴暗之极，初登于天而照四国，后入于地而丧其明。」暗极则明生，物极必反，明夷之终即晋之始。
Divination Reference(original text)
市场处于低迷暗淡时期，宜韬光养晦、保守持仓，等待黎明到来，切勿逆势激进。
处于职场困境或受小人排挤时，隐忍蓄力、保持内心光明，勿与小人正面冲突。
感情遭遇误解或冷遇时，以隐忍和包容度过低谷，真诚终将被看见。
身体出现隐性疾患时，应及早检查，不可忽视深藏体内的健康隐患。
Traditional Reading(original text)
明夷卦象征光明隐入地下，日落西山之象。运势低迷，遭遇困顿。此时宜韬光养晦、收敛锋芒，在黑暗中坚守内心的光明。
事业上遇到打压或排挤，才能无法施展。应忍辱负重、暗中蓄力，不可锋芒毕露，待时局好转再展抱负。
商业上面临困境，可能遭遇不公或损失。应低调行事、控制风险，用智慧而非蛮力渡过难关。
学业上可能受到误解或成绩不被认可。不要灰心，坚持学习、内修明德，终会拨云见日。
感情上可能遭遇暗伤或误解。宜以宽容之心待人，不计较一时得失，真心终会被看见。
决策时应采取迂回策略，不宜正面硬刚。外圆内方，表面顺从、内心坚定，是明夷之时的生存智慧。
School Interpretations(original text)
明夷者，明伤也。日入地中，光明受损。君子处晦而内明，守正不失，韬光养晦以待天时。
此卦地在上、火在下，光明入于地中，有受伤隐晦之象。处境艰难，小人得势。得此卦者，运势不顺、事多阻碍。然内心之光不可熄灭，坚忍守正，终将否极泰来。此乃逆境中修行之卦。
运势低落，宜守不宜攻，韬光养晦。
财运不佳，宜节俭储蓄，勿投机。
家宅不安，防暗损，宜低调。
注意心脏与眼目之疾，心情宜放宽。
