井养不穷，改邑不改井
The Judgment
The Well: the town may be moved, but the well cannot be moved. It neither decreases nor increases. They come and go and draw from the well. If one gets down almost to the water and the rope does not reach all the way, or the jug breaks, it is misfortune.
The hexagram of the Well shows a source that stays fixed while it nourishes all. A town may be relocated, but the well remains; it loses nothing and gains nothing, and people come and go to draw from it. But if the bucket nearly reaches the water yet the rope falls short, or the jug is broken, there is misfortune.
木上有水，井。君子以劳民劝相。
巽乎水而上水，井。井养而不穷也。改邑不改井，乃以刚中也。汔至亦未繘井，未有功也。羸其瓶，是以凶也。
Interpretation(original text)
井，水井也，养而不穷之象。井以木汲水而上，滋养万物、惠泽无穷。井之德在于「不改不变」——城邑可迁而井不可迁，人事可变而井养不变。《彖》曰「改邑不改井」，井象征恒久不变的滋养之源与道德本体。
上坎为水，下巽为风为木。木入水下而上汲，如同以桔槔汲井水之象。程颐释曰：「木下入于水，汲水而上行，井之象也。」巽为入为木，坎为水，以木器入水中汲取上来以养人。水居上而源源不断，养之功不穷不竭。君子观此象，「劳民劝相」，劳勉百姓使之互助。
九五居上卦之中，阳刚中正，为「井冽寒泉」之主——井水清冽可饮，养道之至善。六四居近五之位，阴柔得正，「井甃」修缮井壁，为井养之维护。九二居下卦之中，刚中有德却「井谷射鲋」，才德不得上用。初六在井之底，「井泥不食」，最底层未开发。上六居极，「井收勿幕」，井水汲上来不要覆盖，广施于众。
井继困之后。《序卦》曰：「困乎上者必反下，故受之以井。」在上位困穷者必回归根本以养其源。困与井互为综卦，困为穷竭、井为养源，困极而思养，养而不困。朱熹曰：「井养不穷，困极则当思所以养之也。」困井一组相成，困以砥砺、井以滋养，如阴阳互补。
The Lines
One does not drink the mud of the well. No creatures come to an old well.
A well fouled with silt gives no water fit to drink, and to an abandoned well not even the birds come. Talent and virtue left to run to ruin draw no one near.

初六以阴居阳位不当，处井之最底。「井泥不食」，井底只有泥浆不可食用。「旧井无禽」，废弃的旧井连禽鸟也不来饮水。程颐释曰：「井之下，泥污不可食，如人德浅才薄不足以养人。」初爻为井道未成之时，须不断修德提升，否则如废井弃置，毫无用处。此爻为警醒起步之象。
At the well-hole one shoots at minnows. The jug is cracked and leaks.
The well serves only to spurt water at little fish, and the vessel meant to hold it is cracked and leaking, an image of abilities left unused and even the tools flawed.

九二以阳居阴位不当，然居下卦之中有刚中之德。「井谷射鲋」，井中之水只能射到小鱼鲋，不能上达。「瓮敝漏」，水瓮破裂渗漏。朱熹曰：「九二刚中有才德，然处下而无应于上，德不上行如水漏下。」此爻喻有才而不得用——才德如井水虽有却不能上达以养人，须待知遇之机。
The well is cleaned, but no one drinks from it. This is my heart's sorrow, for one might draw from it. If the king were clear-minded, all would receive their share of the blessing.
The well has been scoured clean, yet no one comes to drink, a grief to the heart, for its water is fit to draw; were the ruler discerning, all alike would share in its blessing.

九三以阳居阳位得正，处下卦之极。「井渫不食」，井水已澄清却无人来食用。「为我心恻」，令人悲伤惋惜。王弼注：「三处下卦之极，井已渫治清洁而人不来汲，有才德而不被用。」然「王明并受其福」，若遇贤明之主则必被赏识。此爻为怀才不遇之苦，但终将被发现和重用。
The well is being lined with stone. No blame.
The shaft of the well is being lined with brick and stone; there is no fault. To repair oneself and shore up one's foundations is necessary work.

六四以阴居阴位得正，处上卦之初近九五。「井甃无咎」，修缮井壁、加固维护则无咎。程颐谓：「四居近君之位，柔正而能修治井道。甃者，以砖石砌井壁也。」六四为井养之维护者——虽不直接供水，但修缮维护使井能持久发挥功能。此爻喻基础设施建设与制度维护之重要性。
In the well there is a clear, cold spring from which one may drink.
The well runs clear and cold, a spring fit to drink from. Virtue and ability joined, upright and pure, bring benefit to all.

九五以阳居阳位，中正尊贵，为井卦之主。「井冽寒泉食」，井水清冽、寒泉可饮。朱熹释曰：「九五阳刚中正居尊位，如井之清冽寒泉，养道之至善也。」此爻为井道之最善——水质清净甘冽，人人可饮。喻以刚中正直之德养天下之人，德如寒泉之清，润泽万物而不竭。
One draws from the well without hindrance. It is dependable. Supreme good fortune.
The water is drawn up and the well left uncovered for all; sincere and open-handed, this brings supreme good fortune. To share freely and hoard nothing is the highest virtue.

上六以阴居阴位得正，处井之极。「井收勿幕，有孚元吉」，井水汲上来不要覆盖，有诚信则大吉。程颐释曰：「井道之成，及于终极。水已汲上，勿覆盖而广施于人，有孚信则大吉。」上六为井道之完成——水已汲出地面，当广布天下，泽被众生。此爻体现井养的最终目的：施惠无穷、大公无私。

School Interpretations(original text)
井者养也。木入水中，汲水而上。井养万民而不穷，君子修德养民亦当如是。
此卦坎水在上、巽木在下，木入水中上汲，如同井水养人。井的位置不变，但水源不断，象征坚守本位、持续奉献。得此卦者，运势平稳，宜安分守己、修身养德。不求变动，但求在本位上做到最好。
运势平稳，安守本分，默默耕耘。
财运稳定，细水长流，不宜投机。
家宅安稳，水源通畅为吉。
注意肾水与肝木调理，宜多饮水。
